Morning Briefing: Mets Surprise MLB With Marcus Stroman Trade - metsmerizedonline.com

Good morning Mets fans!

Today, the Mets will have a day off before starting a three-game set against the White Sox. Assuming he’s not traded before game time, Noah Syndergaard (7-5, 4.33 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Mets. The game can be viewed on SNY and 880 WCBS at 8:10 p.m.

Before the Mets engaged in the craziness that is the trade deadline, they finished off their sweep of the Pirates with an 8-7 victory. The Mets kicked the game off with a six-run first and held on for the nail-biting victory. With a first-inning home run, Michael Conforto became the third outfielder in franchise history to have three seasons with 20+ home runs.  The sweep was only the Mets’ fourth of the season.

Latest Mets News

Yesterday, the Mets announced their acquisition of right-hander Marcus Stroman and cash considerations in exchange for prospects Simeon Woods Richardson and Anthony Kay. After a rough 2018 campaign, Stroman has bounced back to post 2.96 ERA, a 3.52 FIP, a 56.3 GB% and has been worth 2.9 fWAR. Stroman tweeted out that he’ll wear No.7 in New York, becoming the first starting pitcher in history to don that number.

Stroman’s ground-ball heavy approach poses a bit of strange fit in his new team; the Mets have been statistically one of the worst fielding teams in the last few years.

The Mets gave up Kay and Woods-Richardson, who ranked No.3 and No.4 in our midseason prospect rankings, respectively. Kay lit up in the Double-A with a strong start to his year but has come crashing back down to earth with the Syracuse Mets.

Meanwhile, Woods Richardson was drafted in the second round last year; his 2.55 FIP ranks 17th in the Minors among pitchers with 70 innings. With this trade, the Mets have now traded away four of their first 13 selections of the 2018 draft.

Matt den Dekker posted on Instagram that he is retiring.

Jeff McNeil left yesterday’s contest with a right shin contusion after being hit by a pitch in his first at-bat of the game.
