Millis girls eliminate Amesbury 2-0, head to Saturday soccer final against Millbury - Boston Herald

LYNN — For three straight seasons, Millis and Amesbury High’s girls soccer teams had to go through each other to get the chance to play for the MIAA Division 4 state title.

As was the case in the previous two seasons, Millis prevailed. This time, the Tomahawks shut out the Indians 2-0 in the state semifinal on Wednesday at Manning Field.

Millis (17-4-4) will play Millbury for the state title on Saturday at Foley Stadium in Worcester (10 a.m.). Millis, the winner of the previous two Division 4 state titles, will be playing Millbury for the second time in three years.

“It’s amazing,” said Millis junior forward Courtney Bickford, who scored a goal and an assist. “We’re very happy to go back. We kind of knew what to expect from [Amesbury] but you still have to be ready for anything.”

Said Millis coach Steve Bailen, “Adam [Thibodeau] does an amazing job coaching for Amesbury. Every year, the teams are different. They always concern me. We had the scouting report and  prepared for them.”

The Tomahawks took the lead in the 17th minute. Bickford fed Jordyn Farrantino, who dribbled in for 10 yards before scoring from 20 yards out.

The score remained 1-0 at the half. In the 44th minute, Bickford knocked in a rebound from about 5 yards in front of the goal.

“It was a team effort,” Bickford said. “The ball came to me and I got it in. It was a big goal, going up, 2-0.”

Millis had a few more good chances. Farrantino had a direct kick from just outside the box in the final two minutes of the first half, but the Indians’ wall blocked it.

In the second half, Amesbury’s Avery Hallinan and Gabrielle Smyth each made stops. Amesbury goalkeeper Allison Napoli also stopped a breakaway from Grace Jewett in the final minute of play.

Amesbury (14-2-6) had two good chances in the middle of the second half, but Millis keeper Caileen Adams stopped Hallinan’s shot and Alyssa Pettet had a shot that went just wide.

“Our back line did well in the 1v1 and 2v1 situations,” Bailen said. “They have excellent soccer IQ and foot skills.”
