WMass girls soccer: Frozen field puts Smith Academy comeback on ice - GazetteNET

The sixth-seeded Smith Academy girls soccer team trailed No. 3 Lenox by a pair of goals at halftime, but the Falcons never had a chance for a comeback.

Officials inspected the field at halftime and determined the frozen turf was unplayable. Since half the game was complete, the host Millionaires were awarded the Western Massachusetts Division 4 Tournament quarterfinal win, 2-0, Friday.

“Yeah. I’m an official, I’ve actually (called a game off before). Not in a playoff game, that’s the unfortunate part, but sometimes fields are unplayable,” Falcons coach Keith Lepine told The Berkshire Eagle. “Usually it’s rain, today it was frozen. That’s just the way it goes.”

Lenox (9-8-1) will play No. 2 Gateway Regional (13-2-2) in the semifinals next week.

Smith Academy finished 10-8-2.

“I was proud of the way they played,” Lepine said. “We were looking good, we had a couple of chances. Lenox is fast, they took advantage of their speed. We made a mistake at the back and they took advantage. I was looking forward to a really competitive second half, but that’s the way it goes.”

Erin Czelusniak scored both goals for Lenox.

Claire Bennett made four saves in defeat.

Gateway Regional 5, McCann Tech 0 — Erin Harris scored four straight goals as the second-seeded Gators (13-2-2) cruised into the Western Massachusetts Division 4 semifinal round with the win in Huntington.

Rebecca Hyjek scored the first goal 16 minutes into the game. Harris made it 4-0 at halftime, then added one after the break.

Ava Auclair had one assist. She crossed a ball from about 10-12 yards outside the box that Harris one-timed for a goal.

Peyton Bucko had two assists, including one of a corner kick. Donna Viel did not make a save for the shutout.

Gateway will play No. 3 Lenox (9-8-1) next week in the semifinals.

Agawam 2, Belchertown 1 — The fourth-seeded Brownies took an early lead then added to it in the second half to beat the No. 5 Orioles in the Western Massachusetts Division 1 quarterfinals.

“We generated some opportunities. It wasn’t completely one-sided by them, we just didn’t have a lot of offense,” Belchertown coach Kyle Thibeault said. “They’re a good team. We gave one up early that made it challenging.”

Hope Santaniello scored twice to give Agawam a 2-0 lead. Belchertown was playing a man down late when it scored its goal.

Erin Lucas scored from Kyleigh Girard with under three minutes left for the Orioles (9-9-1).

Belchertown played a man down because goalie Julia Jimenez (eight saves) made a quick decision to help her team. Jimenez came out to challenge a through ball, but the Agawam player made a move to avoid the keeper. To prevent a sure 3-0 deficit, Jimenez pulled down the player, who earned a penalty kick, and drew a red card.

Junior varsity keeper Mabelle Bessette replaced Jimenez in goal then made the stop on the PK, keeping the deficit at 2-0. Bessette finished with three saves.
