Michigan State football's 2020 recruiting class: How each player fits, who's their comp - Detroit Free Press

Free Press sports writer Chris Solari breaks down the Michigan State football recruits who signed letters of intent Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period (Note: This story will be updated as players sign):

Signees

WR Montorie Foster

School: St. Edward (Lakewood, Ohio).

Vitals: 6-2, 175.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (n/a nationally, No. 53 WR)

The buzz: In one season of varsity football, the athletic Foster earned a spot on the Cleveland.com all-offensive team with 40 catches for 634 yards and eight touchdowns. His route running will be a work in progress as the prep hoops star focuses on football full-time, but the ball skills and willingness to block are evident.

Comparison: Mark Dell.

TE Tommy Guajardo

School: Dearborn.

Vitals: 6-3, 230.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 818 nationally, No. 35 TE).

The buzz: Sure hands helped Guajardo make an impact at tight end, though he may be undersized for the spot in the Big Ten; could become an H-back or big-bodied WR. He is a versatile athlete who also could shift to defense at DE, LB or S. Was second player to commit in 2020 class — and the first signee announced by MSU on Wednesday.

Comparison: Matt Seybert.

OLB Devin Hightower

School: Archbishop Hoban (Akron, Ohio).

Vitals: 6-1, 225.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 737 nationally, No. 49 OLB).

The buzz: A thumper with speed and good play-recognition, he finished with 10 sacks and returned four of his eight interceptions for TDs to become Ohio’s Division II defensive player of the year. Projects to be a weak-side LB at MSU with his ability to defend RBs and TEs in pass coverage.

Comparison: Chris Norman.

Commitments

DE Simeon Barrow Jr.

School: Grovetown, Georgia.

Vitals: 6-2, 252.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 860 nationally, No. 42 weak-side DE).

The buzz: Has the bulk that typically translates to a college defensive tackle, but he also is athletic enough to be a disruptive force in the backfield coming off the edge. This season had 63 tackles, which includes 18.5 for a loss and eight of those sacks.

Comparison: Trevor Anderson.

School: Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Vitals: 6-2, 200.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (n/a nationally, No. 105 OLB).

Comparison: Matt Morrissey.

DE Avery Dunn

School: Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Vitals: 6-4, 216.

247Sports Composite rating: 3 stars, (n/a nationally, No. 53 weak-side DE).

The buzz: Delivered a strong summer and senior season, in which he registered 31 tackles for a loss. He shows power and elusiveness in north-and-south pass rush along with good lateral quickness in pursuit.

Comparison: Shilique Calhoun.

OG Dallas Fincher

School: East Kentwood.

Vitals: 6-4, 274.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 463 nationally, No. 26 OG).

The buzz: Fincher, whose father Mark was an MSU offensive lineman in the 1980s, plays with solid leverage and strength at the point of attack up front. He also has the versatility to play any of the three interior line positions.

Comparison: Travis Jackson.

CB Angelo Grose

School: Mansfield, Ohio.

Vitals: 5-10, 170.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 689 nationally, No. 53 CB).

The buzz: Grose – Mr. Football Ohio runner-up and the Division III defensive player of the year – showed speed in coverage, hard-hitting ability and ball skills. The versatile athlete made 112 tackles, but he also flashed at WR and RB as well as on punt and kick returns with 1,038 receiving yards and 23 TDs on offense and special teams. Also handled all three kicking jobs and played some QB for his state championship team.

Comparison: Darqueze Dennard.

ILB Cal Haladay

School: Southern Columbia (Catawissa, Pennsylvania).

Vitals: 6-0, 197.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 803 nationally, No. 32 ILB).

The buzz: A hard-hitter in the mold of MSU’s long history of middle linebackers, Haladay won a third straight state title, can pursue laterally, shoot the gaps and shed blockers. Possesses a strong work ethic and a football mind. He also comes from strong athletic bloodlines – his father, Greg, was an NCAA runner-up as a heavyweight wrestler.

Comparison: Eric Gordon.

QB Noah Kim

School: Westfield (Chantilly, Virginia).

Vitals: 6-2, 180.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (n/a nationally, No. 44 pro-style QB).

The buzz: A broken leg as a junior stunted Kim’s development, but he has proven to be a dual-threat QB with ability to create plays on the run. More importantly, he has been a winner throughout his high school tenure.

Comparison: Kirk Cousins.

DE Kyle King

School: New Palestine, Indiana.

Vitals: 6-4, 242.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 929 nationally, No. 49 strong-side DE).

The buzz: A finalist for the Indianapolis Star’s Mr. Football Indiana, King is a high-motor edge rusher who had 67 tackles as a senior and 28 1/2 career sacks. He showed the ability to shed blockers at the line despite facing near-constant double-teams.

Comparison: Kenny Willekes.

WR Terry Lockett

School: Minnehaha Academy (Minneapolis).

Vitals: 6-0, 165.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 557 nationally, No. 92 WR).

The buzz: The Minneapolis native returned home after a basketball stint at SPIRE Academy in Ohio, playing alongside Rocket Watts and LaMelo Ball a year ago. On the gridiron, Lockett showed the ability to make big plays thanks to his speed and deft hands, finishing with 53 catches for 1,030 yards and 14 TDs.

Comparison: Keshawn Martin.

DE Chris Mayfield

School: Hilliard (Ohio) Bradley.

Vitals: 6-2, 250.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (n/a, No. 62 weak-side DE)

The buzz: A multisport star, Mayfield has the frame to move inside if he adds bulk but the quickness and power to be a backfield presence off the edge. He also possesses enough quickness and hand-eye coordination from his high-level basketball background to move to tight end.

Comparison: Denzel Drone.

K Jack Olsen

School: Wheaton (Illinois) Warrenville South.

Vitals: 5-11, 170.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (n/a nationally, No. 3 K).

Vitals: 6-3, 235.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (n/a nationally, No. 65 weak-side DE).

RB Jordon Simmons

School: McEachern (Powder Springs, Georgia).

Vitals: 5-10, 185.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 595 nationally, No. 44 RB).

Comparison: Elijah Collins.

OLB/S Darius Snow

School: Hebron (Carrollton, Texas).

Vitals: 6-0, 214.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 401 nationally, No. 29 OLB).

The buzz: The son of MSU basketball legend Eric Snow, Darius takes more after his uncle, Percy, the hard-hitting Spartan LB who won the Butkus and Lombardi trophies. Darius Snow had been a four-star prospect at one point and can both crash down as a run stopper or be a ball-hawk in pass coverage.

Comparison: Kurtis Drummond.

OT Justin Stevens

School: Clarkson Football North (Mississauga, Ontario).

Vitals: 6-6, 285.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 3 prep school recruit nationally, No. 1 prep school OT).

The buzz: Late-blooming with massive size – he added more than 50 pounds the past few years. Projects to be a physical force as a blocker on the edge, though it generally takes time for Canadians to adjust to the college game. The former DE is expected to enroll in January, which could accelerate development.

Comparison: Dan France.

WR Ian Stewart

School: Oscar A. Carlson (Rockwood).

Vitals: 6-3, 200.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 660 nationally, No. 104 WR).

Comparison: Cody White.

WR Ricky White

School: Marietta, Georgia.

Vitals: 6-1, 165.

247Sports Composite rating: Three-stars, (No. 805 nationally, No. 123 WR).

The buzz: An agile, versatile receiver who can play either outside or in the slot, White showed both the speed to get separation defenders deep and the strength to run through them over the middle. He is a playmaker that MSU has been craving.

Comparison: Bennie Fowler.
