The final Sunday of the 2019 NFL regular season has somehow already arrived. Here’s a Philadelphia Eagles focused rooting guide for all of the Week 17 games.
It’s the No. 4 seed or bust for the Eagles since they can only win the NFC East and not a wild card spot.
1 - San Francisco 49ers (12-3)
2 - Green Bay Packers (12-3)
3 - New Orleans Saints (12-3)
4 - Philadelphia Eagles (8-7)
5 - Seattle Seahawks (11-4)
6 - Minnesota Vikings (10-5)
...
7 - Los Angeles Rams (8-7)
8 - Chicago Bears (7-8)
9 - Dallas Cowboys (7-8)
10 - Tampa Bay Buccaneers (7-8)
11 - Atlanta Falcons (6-9)
12 - Arizona Cardinals (5-9-1)
13 - Carolina Panthers (5-10)
14 - New York Giants (4-11)
15- Detroit Lions (3-11-1)
16 - Washington (3-12)
GETTING THE EAGLES TO THE PLAYOFFS
PHILADELPHIA EAGLES at NEW YORK GIANTS: The Eagles can clinch the NFC East if they beat or tie the Giants. Gotta get it done. Beat the Giants.
WASHINGTON at DALLAS COWBOYS: The Eagles shouldn’t be relying on Washington helping them to get to the playoffs ... but we’ll note the Eagles can also clinch the division if the Cowboys lose to or tie with Washington. The bonus to a Washington win is that it’d potentially knock them out of the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, keeping Chase Young out of the NFC East. The silver lining to a Cowboys win accompanied by an Eagles win is that Dallas would just be ruining their draft positioning. Root against the Cowboys.
POTENTIAL EAGLES PLAYOFF OPPONENTS
SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS at SEATTLE SEAHAWKS: The winner of the NFC East will host the loser of this Sunday Night Football game in the wild card round. Earlier this week, BGN polled readers about their preference. The results:
Let’s go with the majority here and say the Eagles should be hoping to face Seattle next weekend. Another bonus to a San Fran win is it likely keeps New Orleans out of a first-round bye. Root for the 49ers.
GREEN BAY PACKERS at DETROIT LIONS: Seeing the Packers get a top two seed is preferable to New Orleans — a more dangerous team — having one. Also, a Lions loss combined with a Washington win allows Detroit to get the No. 2 overall pick and keep Chase Young out of the NFC East. Root for the Packers.
NEW ORLEANS SAINTS at CAROLINA PANTHERS: Can’t see the Saints losing this game but root for the unlikely upset anyway in order to keep New Orleans away from a first-round bye. Root for the Panthers.
EAGLES DRAFT PICK CONSIDERATION
ATLANTA FALCONS at TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: The Eagles own the Falcons’ 2020 sixth-round pick due to the Johnathan Cyprien trade. Might as well root for it to be as good as it possibly can be. Root for the Buccaneers.
MIAMI DOLPHINS at NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS: Yeah, I don’t think the Dolphins are winning this game. But it’d be pretty sweet if they did and knocked the Pats out of a first-round bye. Remember that the Eagles own the Pats’ 2020 fifth-round pick due to the Michael Bennett trade. The sooner the Pats are eliminated from the playoffs, the better. The upside to a Pats win is that the Dolphins can move ahead of Washington in the draft order if Dallas loses. Root for the Dolphins.
EAGLES DRAFT POSITIONING CONSIDERATIONS
The hope is that the Eagles make the playoffs. This part of the rooting guide is just in case they don’t beat the Giants and draft positioning suddenly becomes important. 2020 NFL Draft order via Tankathon:
CHICAGO BEARS at MINNESOTA VIKINGS: The Vikings are locked in to the No. 6 seed so they’ll be resting some starters. That’s good news if the Eagles lose because Philly can move ahead of Chicago’s pick (owned by Oakland) in the first round. If the Eagles and the Cowboys both win, though, it’s better if the Bears lose so they can move ahead of Dallas in the draft order. Root for the Bears.
INDIANAPOLIS COLTS at JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: If Philly loses, the Eagles can move ahead of the Colts in the draft order with a Colts win. If Philly and Dallas both win, a Colts loss is preferable to move Indy ahead in the draft order. Root for the Colts.
OAKLAND RAIDERS at DENVER BRONCOS: If Philly loses, the Eagles can move ahead of the Raiders in the draft order with a Raiders win. If Philly and Dallas both win, a Raiders loss is preferable to move Indy ahead in the draft order. Root for the Raiders.
WHAT’S LEFT
CLEVELAND BROWNS at CINCINNATI BENGALS: The Cowboys could move ahead of the Browns in the draft order if they lose and Cleveland wins. Cincy already has the No. 1 pick locked up so there’s no danger in them winning. Root for the Bengals.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS at KANSAS CITY CHIEFS: Andy Reid’s team can knock the Pats out of a first-round bye if they win and New England suffers an unlikely loss. Plus a Chargers loss keeps them ahead of Atlanta in the draft order. Root for the Chiefs.
NEW YORK JETS at BUFFALO BILLS: Doesn’t matter for the first round since the Jets will still be ahead of Dallas in the draft order even if they win and the Cowboys lose. If you deeply care about the sixth-round pick Atlanta owes to the Eagles, it’s better for New York to stay ahead of the Falcons in the draft order. Root for the Bills.
TENNESSEE TITANS at HOUSTON TEXANS: The Texans are expected to rest starters for the Titans should be able to win and get the No. 6 seed. In the event the Pats drop to the No. 3 seed, Tennessee would have a better chance at upsetting them than Oakland or Pittsburgh would. Root for the Titans.
PITTSBURGH STEELERS at BALTIMORE RAVENS: The Ravens will be resting their starters against a Steelers team that can’t pick ahead of Dallas or Philly in the first round. Who cares.
LOS ANGELES RAMS at ARIZONA CARDINALS: If you deeply care about the sixth-round pick Atlanta owes to the Eagles, it’s better for the Cards to stay ahead of the Falcons in the draft order. Root for the Rams.
