Two weeks after announcing Brendan Faherty was no longer coaching the women’s soccer team, Yale has promoted assistant Sarah Martinez to the head job.
The school made the announcement Tuesday night. On Nov. 20, Yale announced Faherty was no longer an employee of the school and it was soon revealed in a Yale Daily News story that the coach allegedly acted inappropriately with players during his tenure at the University of New Haven.
Faherty, though his attorney, denied wrongdoing and UNH officials have said the school will hire an independent firm to investigate the allegations. Faherty coached at UNH from 2002 to 2009.
He came to Yale in December 2018, replacing longtime coach Rudy Meredith. Meredith resigned following the 2018 season, and he later pleaded quilty to two counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with the high-profile national admission scandal.
A product of Guilford, Faherty came to Yale from Stony Brook. Martinez also came from Stony Brook, where she served as an assistant coach for three seasons. Martinez, who is from the Seattle area, played at the University of Washington
“Coach Martinez's leadership has helped drive the Yale women's soccer team to new heights, on and off the field,” athletic director Vicky Chun said in a statement. “Sarah's remarkable success as a student athlete — including as captain and MVP — has helped fuel her even more successful coaching career. The leadership, determination and resilience she learned on the playing field shine through in her work today with our student athletes. ... We are confident Sarah will continue to grow and build our program, and our players, for years to come.”
At Washington, Martinez led her team to three NCAA Tournament appearances and served as team captain. She was All-Pac 12 second team as a senior and joined the program’s staff after graduating in 2012. Faherty joined the Washington coaching staff in 2013 and hired Martinez as an assistant after leaving for Stony Brook following the 2015 season.

“Sarah has invested in her coaching career since her days as a student-athlete at Washington. She is a natural leader and understands the importance of building trust within a team. She has the ability to recruit the best and the brightest and is extremely capable of getting them to perform at an elite level,” Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore said in a statement. “Her humility is what will keep her sharp as a coach because she always strives to learn and improve which is the same expectation she has of her student-athletes.”
Said Martinez, “I am fortunate to continue my coaching career here at Yale and am grateful for the many coaches, teammates, administrators and mentors who have championed my growth. Yale is a special place that has demonstrated a commitment to these talented group of student-athletes and I look forward to guiding their growth in the future.”
