Aptos edges Santa Cruz, takes over lead in SCCAL girls soccer standings | Local Roundup - Santa Cruz Sentinel

The Aptos High girls soccer team leapfrogged Santa Cruz in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League standings with its 2-1 win over the host Cardinals on Thursday night.

Both teams have two games remaining in the regular season. Aptos (6-1-1 in league, 19 points) plays at San Lorenzo Valley on Tuesday and faces Scotts Valley on Thursday. Santa Cruz (5-1-2, 17 points) plays at Soquel on Tuesday and at Harbor on Thursday.

Harbor 1, at Soquel 0: The Pirates stunned defending league champion Soquel in SCCAL play Thursday night.

Although Soquel dominated the first 20 minutes, Harbor weathered the storm; then began to control the tempo and action of the game, Pirates coach Wes Bare said.

In the 60th minute Senior Ana Burrows headed a throw-in towards the penalty area, where junior Maddie Park controlled the ball and slotted it near post.

Junior goalie Kay Aparicio and senior centerback Eva Behrens held the potent Knights offense scoreless.

On Tuesday, Harbor (3-12-2, 2-6-0) hosts Scotts Valley while Soquel (10-5-3, 3-3-2) hosts Santa Cruz.

Marina 3, Ceiba 2: The Spratans dropped their PCAL Arroyo Division match Thursday.

Boys soccer

Players of the Week: Pacific Collegiate’s Bailey Prochaska was named one of MaxPreps/United Soccer Coaches High School Players of the Week for Jan. 20-26, it was announced Thursday. He had a total of six goals and an assist in wins over Rancho San Juan and Stevenson in PCAL Santa Lucia Division play.

Watsonville 2, at North Salinas 0: Junior Jeal Leal scored twice, giving him a team-leading 12 goals, and the No. 26 state-ranked Wildcatz won their PCAL Gabilan Division game Thursday.

Jeremiah Lopez had two assists for the Wildcatz (12-3-1, 4-0-1), who host San Benito on Monday at 6:45 p.m.

Women’s basketball

UCSC 100, at Pacific Union 80: Ashley Kowack scored 26 points on Thursday and the Banana Slugs scored 100 points for the second straight game.

CJ Catina and Emily Mitchell each scored 13 points and reserves Amanda Inserra and Lilli Hammons each scored nine points.

The Slugs made 14 3-pointers, recorded 20 assists and made 16 steals. They host Simpson at Kaiser Permanente Arena on Sunday at 2 p.m.

College baseball

At Cabrillo 5, Laney 2: Brennan King hit a two-run single in the seventh inning and the Seahawks rallied past Laney to stay unbeaten Thursday.

Ivan Perez and Daniel Miranda each had two hits and a run scored. Anthony Karagiannopoulos had a hit and scored twice. Chandler Sanguinetti had a hit and RBI and Gordon Vaughn had a hit and run scored.

Jordan Lanini (1-0) earned the win in relief of starter Clayton Ray, who gave up two runs over seven innings. David Eichhorn also threw a shutout inning. Ian Koenig earned the save.

The Seahawks (5-0) host San Joaquin Delta (1-1) on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m.

College softball

San Joaquin Delta 8, at Cabrillo 0: Julia Cano-Mendoza doubled and teammates Dezaray Angulo and Katrina Heinemann also had hits in the Seahawks’ home opener Thursday.

Pitcher Cano-Mendoza took the loss for the Seahawks (0-3).

At Cabrillo 5, Sequoias 4: Alexis Navarro was 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI and the Seahawks earned a doubleheader split Thursday.

Julia Cano-Mendoza had a walk, double, two RBIs and run scored for the Seahawks. Andrea Duran had a hit, RBI and run scored and Liana Ginzalez had a hit and run scored.

Pitcher Alexis Navarro earned the win for the Seahawks (1-3), who host a doubleheader Saturday. They face Ohlone at 10 a.m. and Diablo valley at noon.

Surfing

SLO CAL Open: A pair of Santa Cruz surfers were eliminated in Round 3 at the World Surf League’s SLO CAL Open, a Men’s Qualifying Series 1,000 event, in Pismo Beach on Thursday.

Nic Lamb (7.47) took third in Heat 2 of Round 3 and was eliminated. Lamb took second second in Heat 1 of Round 2 with a scored of 9.14.

Nic Hdez (6.53) took fourth in Heat 8 of Round 3 and was eliminated.

Boys basketball

At Soquel 54, Harbor 48: Max Walters scored 15 points to lead the Knights to the SCCAL win Thursday.

RJ Wyrsch and Keone Sayers each added eight points for Soquel (13-9, 5-3).

Brendan Bobo scored 22 points to lead the Pirates (11-1, 2-6). Trevor Hill added nine points.

Soquel hosts Santa Cruz on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

PCS 62, at Anzar 33: Malachi Douyon scored 19 points to lead the Arroyo Division-leading Pumas to the PCAL win Thursday.

Luca Tolaio scored 10 points for PCS and Colby Beck-Watts and Ibrahim Alivov each added nine. Andrew Hubbell had a season-high 12 rebounds.

PCS (11-5, 8-0) faces Ceiba on Monday at Pajaro Valley Middle School at 7 p.m.

Kirby 70, at Ceiba 53: Junior Anton Orme had a game-high 31 points, eight rebounds, five steals and three assists to help the Griffins rally for the PCAL Arroyo Division win at Pajaro Valley Middle School on Thursday.

Ceiba led 33-27 in the third quarter but couldn’t hold on.

Kevin Jones added 20 points for Kirby (5-8, 3-4) and Casey Dashtban added 14 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Senior guard Jesse Franco scored 20 points to lead the Spartans, but followed out with 5:28 left in the fourth quarter. Yan Banales had nine points and 14 rebounds for Ceiba and freshman Gio Aguirre had 10 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.

At North Monterey County 57, MVC 52, OT: The Mustangs (9-10, 2-4) lost their PCAL Mission Division game in overtime Thursday.

Girls basketball

At MVC 61, Seaside 22: Angelina Cortes had 22 points, four rebounds and two steals to lead the Mustangs to the PCAL Gabilan Division win Thursday.

Hanna Harvey had 10 points and five rebounds for MVC, Madison Hill had nine points, seven rebounds and four steals and Mackenzie Tellez had eight points and four assists.

MVC (13-7, 3-3) plays at Notre Dame in Salinas on Monday at 7 p.m.

At Soquel 43, Harbor 37: The Pirates led at the half, but were unable to finish off the Knights in SCCAL play.

Freshman guard Isis Yao had 11 points and nine rebounds to lead the Knights. Sophomore guard Audrey Finch had 10 points and four steals and senior guard Jess Muhly also scored 10 points. Sophomore guard Lexi Noble added seven points.

Freshman Molly Endert Tatum scored 12 points to lead the Pirates. Senior Samantha Gonzalez added 10 points.

Soquel hosts Santa Cruz on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
