FAIRFIELD — Katie Garrigan chipped a pass over the defense and Liz Anderson’s shot deflected off a defender into the net to give Rodriguez High a 1-0 girls soccer victory over Vanden in a battle for first place in the Monticello Empire League at Coach Ed Hopkins Memorial Stadium, Friday.
“Katie chipped the ball over the back line and Liz was able to take it,” Mustangs coach Josh Levine said of the goal in the 56th minute. “It was not a great shot, but a good enough shot to deflect off one of the Vanden players into the back of the net.”
Goalkeeper Jada Shelley and the rest of the defense for Rodriguez (7-2-3, 4-0) made the goal stand up.
The win helped avenge a late season loss last year that cost the Mustangs the MEL title and dropped them to third place in the final standings.
“This was a big game, both undefeated (in league),” Levine said. “It was a battle tonight, very physical game. It went back and forth. we played extremely hard and were just able to pull it out. It felt really good.”
The JV game finished in a 1-1 tie, Rodriguez getting an early goal by Julia Villareal and the Vikings getting the equalizer in the final five minutes.
Rodriguez hosts Vacaville on Tuesday but will be the Bulldogs will be the home team as the game couldn’t be played at Zunino Stadium, which is being renovated. Vanden, meanwhile, entertains Armijo.
Armijo 4, Fairfield 1: At Fairfield, Lizet Mancilla scored a pair of goals as the Armijo Royals notched a 4-1 win over their rivals from Fairfield.
Paulina Rubio assisted on Mancilla’s first goal in the opening 10 minutes of play, with the second goal coming midway through the second half on a loose ball from a corner kick.
Evelin Rodriguez scored late in the first half on a direct kick, and Lilliana Fenn added a goal for Armijo just before the end of the game.
Lauriana Singh, Ximena Rodriguez, Aracelly Olmos, Leslye Verdugo, and Keyri Rivas were also instrumental in the win for the Royals.
No statistics were available for Fairfield.
In JV action, the teams tied, 0-0.
