Wildcatz win Gabilan Division soccer opener | Local Roundup - Santa Cruz Sentinel

Eric Vazquez had two goals and an assist and the Watsonville High boys soccer team beat North Salinas 3-1 in its Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division opener Wednesday night.

Jeal Leal also scored for the Wildcatz and Alexis Valenzuela had an assist.

The Wildcatz (8-3, 1-0), ranked No. 43 in the state by MaxPreps.com, play at San Benito (2-4-4, 0-0-1) on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

Palma 3, at Monte Vista Christian 2: Cristian Linares had a goal and assist in the Mustangs’ PCAL Cypress Division opener Wednesday night.

Andrew Bachman also scored for the Mustangs (5-2-3, 0-1-0), who host Gonzales on Friday.

At Aptos 1, Santa Cruz 1: The Cardinals earned their third straight SCCAL tie Wednesday night.

Nico Larter scored an unassisted goal in the 58th minute for Santa Cruz.

Goalie Elvin Zamora made four saves for the Cardinals (0-6-3, 0-0-3), who host Soquel on Friday at 6 p.m.

Girls basketball

MVC 60, at Seaside 42: Hanna Harvey scored 19 points and the Mustangs won their PCAL Gabilan Divsion opener Wednesday night.

Madison Hill scored 14 points for MVC and Paloma Ramirez added 12 points.

MVC (11-4, 1-0) hosts Notre Dame of Salinas on Friday at 7 p.m.

At Scotts Valley 55, Basis Independent 15: Taylor Spence had 20 points and 18 rebounds in the Falcons’ nonleague win over their San Jose opponent Wednesday night.

Ella Giguiere added 12 points for the Falcons, who host Harbor in SCCAL play on Friday.

At Trinity Christian 32, Ceiba 21: The Spartans dropped their PCAL Arroyo Division game Wednesday.

Boys basketball

At Trinity Christian 93, Ceiba 87: The Spartans dropped their PCAL Arroyo Division game Wednesday.

Men’s basketball

At Gavilan 84, Cabrillo 76: The Seahawks suffered their first loss in Coast Conference South Division play Wednesday.

The Seahawks (10-9, 2-1) host De Anza on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

At Gavilan 70, Cabrillo 53: Savanah Quintana-Martin had 19 points and six rebounds in the Seahawks’ Coast Conference South Division loss Wednesday.

Michaela Thornton added nine points and 14 rebounds for Cabrillo. Abbi Saxton had seven points and 13 rebounds and Ananiah Chavez also had 13 rebounds. Kenedi Walters had six points and four rebounds.

Cabrillo (6-10, 1-2) was outscored 21-12 in the second quarter and 21-10 in the fourth.

Girls soccer

At Marina 5, Ceiba 3: The Spartans lost their PCAL Arroyo Division game Wednesday.
