CSN advances past Keswick to set up rematch

St. Petersburg-Keswick Christian made host Community School sweat in the Class 2A regional quarterfinals – but only for about 90 seconds.

Though leading just 1-0 the Seahawks were in full control early in the second half. Then Keswick Christian’s Caleb Rogers got behind the defense and tied the game after CSN turned the ball over at midfield.

Remaining calm and steady, Community School regained the lead less than two minutes later on a goal from Jake Hannus assisted by Ethan Marks. Marks later added another goal to give the Seahawks a 3-1 win.

“I think we were definitely the stronger team,” Marks said. “(Keswick) had a few lucky chances were we would make a mistake, but overall the team played good all night.”

The Seahawks (19-4-1) scored first, a goal by Peter Shaffer in the 22nd minute. Rogers’s tying goal came seven minutes into the second half.

Community School will play at Canterbury in the 2A-Region 3 semifinals on Saturday. Last season the Seahawks lost to Canterbury in the district finals and the regional semifinals.

The Cougars also are the last team to beat Community School. The Seahawks are 7-0-1 in their past eight games. Keswick’s score Wednesday was the first goal CSN has allowed since a 9-4 loss to Canterbury on Jan. 17.

Naples earns first regional victory in a decade

Naples High, the No. 1 seed in the region, beat eighth-seeded St. Petersburg-Northeast 1-0 at home in the Class 6A-Region 3 quarterfinals.

For the Golden Eagles (20-1-3), it was the first time they’d won a regional game since 2010. This season is the first time Naples has qualified for regionals since 2011.

Naples will host a regional semifinal on Saturday, where the Eagles will face rival Lely for the fourth time this season. Naples has three one-goal wins over the Trojans this year, including last week in the district championship game.

Lely gets road win in Clearwater against Countryside

The Lely Trojans were one of a handful of Southwest Florida teams to make it past the first round of the state tournament.

Lely handled business in Pinellas County as the fifth-seed in Class 5A-Region 3, defeating Countryside 3-1. The Trojans were up 3-0 until the Cougars scored a garbage time goal with under 10 minutes to go in the game.

Kener Herrera scored twice, assisted once each by Rafael Palacios and Jesus Barrera. Johnathan Garcia scored as well. Jude St. Cyr came through with the assist on that goal.

"It felt great to get the win tonight," Lely striker David Gomez said. "Tonight we came out and fought from start to finish, we played a great team. Now that it’s do or die we are making sure not to hold anything back. The team is hungry and ready for any opponent that we have to play."

“We are super excited to move on to the regional semifinals,” Lely goalkeeper Robert Pentronzio said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but we all believe in each other, which is what makes us a great team.”

With the win, the Trojans (20-5-2) will get a fourth crack against Naples (20-1-3). The Golden Eagles have taken all three matchups this season, all of which have been decided by one goal.

Cougars cruise to first-round playoff victory

At home in a first round playoff game as the second seed in Class 2A-Region 3, the Canterbury Cougars were on cruise control for much of the night, defeating the Panthers from Bradenton Christian 5-0.

Canterbury’s Patrick Horan, the leading goal scorer in the nation, netted a hat trick for the Cougars. McClearan Baggett and Austin Alley each chipped in one.

“I was very impressed with the composure we showed,” Canterbury coach Mick Whitewood said. “We kept momentum and played some attractive football, our finishing was off tonight but we kept possession and controlled the game, we are staying humble and hungry.”

“It was a solid team performance from the boys and it’ll be easy to build on it this Saturday,” Horan said. “We are taking this one game at a time and we’re focused and ready for the next challenge.”

The Cougars (17-2) will get to square off against Community School (19-4-1), who defeated Keswick Christian 3-1 Wednesday night.

Wiregrass Ranch ends Fort Myers' season with second-half strikes

The bounce of the ball just didn’t go Fort Myers’ way Wednesday night against one of Florida’s top teams.

A near own goal that would have given the Green Wave an early second half lead stayed out and Wiregrass Ranch picked up two goals in the final 20 minutes to earn a 2-0 victory to advance in 6A regional play.

After Fort Myers played an excellent first half defensively, the Green Wave were the sharper team going forward after the restart. Darrius Talbert nearly gave Fort Myers a 1-0 lead with a shot on the run that went just wide of the right post in the 43rd minute. Three minutes later, Emre Kaplan’s tough work down by the Bulls’ net created a re-direction off a Wiregrass Ranch defender that hit the crossbar but did not cross the goal line.

In the 59th minute, the Bulls finally broke through in spectacular fashion as Justin Amis volleyed home a right-footed strike from just outside of the box.

Fort Myers couldn’t generate many quality opportunities to try and square the match and in the 75th minute, Alec Santiago iced the match, finishing a counter attack with a blistering finish for Wiregrass Ranch, who finished fifth overall in the FHSAA’s final state rankings before the playoffs began.

Green Wave head coach Chris Reid said if his team could have gotten one break to go its way it could have made a big difference.

“Going down got our guys a little down, but all season long, they’ve been able to come back,” Reid said. “No matter how much they’re down, they try to fight back. That’s one of the traits at Fort Myers we started last year and we carried it this year, going down in the district final with two minutes left and we came back and won. They kept fighting, they shouldn’t keep their heads down. We had more of the chances, we just didn’t finish them off. That’s soccer.”

Bishop Verot's season ends in penalties

In a match that neither team deserved to lose, Bishop Verot was knocked off 4-3 in penalty kicks by The Villages, ending the Vikings' season in a 3A regional quarterfinal.

The two teams played the first 100 minutes without either finding the back of the net despite opportunities for each being traded. After five shooters in penalties, the Vikings and the Buffalo were knotted up at three each.

Zach Bovelsky gave The Villages a 4-3 advantage and needing to make his kick to send the shootout to a seventh shooter, Bishop Verot’s Ethan Cossu’s strong shot was knocked away by the left hand of Buffalo goalkeeper Lucas Gordon that ended the match.

Viking head coach Eddie Villarreal lauded his team’s effort playing a clean match without many miscues, but lamented that the luck of the draw with penalties was difficult with a young roster facing the most pressure they had felt all year.

“It’s part of the game, the luck of penalties,” Villarreal said. “It was a back and forth match, whoever made a mistake was going to lose. The Villages executed their penalties better and their keeper made a couple good saves. We had a lot of freshman who started, so hopefully this is a build up and something to grow from. We’re proud of what we did this year.”

Cape Coral explodes in second half in win over Osceola

It took a little while, but the Cape Coral boys soccer team was not phased by a scoreless first half by both teams.

The Seahawks opened up the floodgates in the second half, netting four goals to send Osceola back to Clearwater with a season-ending loss.

Lucas Rosales opened up the scoring for the Seahawks in the 42nd minute. He found the back the net 19 minutes later to double the lead.

The momentum shift in favor of Cape Coral continued after that, as an Osceola player tried to redirect a kick by Cape Coral’s Danilo Gomez. Instead, the ball made it into the back of the net, stretching Cape’s lead from there.

The Seahawks (17-4-5) will have to make a road trip up to the St. Petersburg area to take on Seminole, the second seed in Class 5A-Region 3. Osceola closes its season with a record of 13-7-3.
