Offensive prospects who stood out at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine - Mile High Report

The top offensive prospects headed to Indianapolis this week to take part in the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine. These prospects went through physicals, meetings with General Managers and Coaches, met with the media, and took part in the on-the-field drills. Some prospects stood out amongst the rest, some did exactly what they were expected, some disappointed while others didn’t do much at all.

With the Broncos likely selecting multiple offensive prospects and playmakers during the draft, it is a good time to take a look at which ones stood out during the Combine who may interest them during the 2020 NFL Draft.

Alabama Wide Receiver, Henry Ruggs III

He didn’t break John Ross’s 40-time record, but he still did run a very fast time. Ruggs ran a blistering 4.27 40-time during Thursday night’s on the field workouts.

Ruggs didn’t only run fast, he also jumped out of the building. He had an impressive 42 inch vertical as well as a 131 inch broad jump.

He was billed as an explosive athlete and he proved just that during his workouts.

The Broncos have the 15th overall selection and currently Ruggs is widely projected as the favorite for him. However, this showing at the Combine could boost his stock enough where he may not be available for them at 15th overall.

Ceedee Lamb didn’t run the fastest and while Jerry Jeudy had a solid Combine showing, neither looked good as Ruggs who could be leaving Indy as WR1 as we head towards April’s 2020 NFL Draft.

Iowa Offensive Lineman, Tristan Wirfs

I fully expected the Iowa offensive lineman to have himself a solid showing during the workout portion of the Combine but man, I did not expect this.

He ran a 4.85 40-time officially while weighing at 320lbs. What might be even more impressive was his vertical jump of 36.5 inches (higher than some wide receivers) and his record-setting broad jump.

Wirfs is an impressive athlete and he put it on full display for all to see at the Combine.

Unfortunately, this means Wirfs who is projected as a tackle or guard depending who you talk too is likely a top 10 pick during April’s NFL Draft. I had a hard time seeing him fall to 15 to begin with, but a showing like this pretty much elimated any chance of that happening.

He would have fit in nicely at left tackle or guard for the Broncos. However, it looks like this will just be pipedream for the “OT OR BUST” crowd in Broncos Country.

Louisville Offensive Tackle, Mekhi Becton

Becton’s night was shortened after he suffered some tightness after his 40-yard dash. However, he made the most of his night during the one drill he partaked in.

Becton is a whole lot of man coming in at 6’7” and 364 pounds. He is a mammoth of a man and this mammoth of a man was moving on Friday night. He is known for being agile for his size and he showed everyone in attendance and watching that he is just that. This 6’7”, 364 pound man ran a 5.1 40-time on Friday night.

Again, this is all he did during the on the field portion of the session, but he made the most of his limited workout.

Becton always seemed like a longshot to make it to 15, but him showing this athleticism at his size and ability likely has him off the board before the Broncos select in the first-round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Baylor Wide Receiver, Denzel Mims

The 2020 NFL Draft is full of very talented wide receiving prospects. While the big three have cemented themselves as the top tier guys, one guy cemented himself as potentially the next best receiver of the group. That receiver being Baylor wide receiver Denzel Mims.

At 6’3” and 207 pounds, Mims ran a very impressive official 40-time of 4.38 seconds. He jumped a solid 38.5 inches and continued the momentum he gained at the Senior Bowl to the Combine.

With the Broncos potentially not getting one of the big three wide receivers at 15, they could be targeting one on day two of the 2020 NFL Draft. Mims would be an excellent addition to the teams wide receiving group while giving them some more size and some much needed speed to the position.

He met with the Broncos at the Combine so there may be some interest there so he is someone to keep an eye on moving forward.

Wisconsin Running Back, Jonathan Taylor

Those of you who hate the idea of a running back in the early portion of the draft can continue scrolling now because you will not like what I am about to say.

The top running back in this years draft is an open competition among multiple backs. We may have had some separation. Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor is coming off a very impressive college career and showed he can be that sort of back in the NFL.

The 226 pound running back ran an impressive official 40-time of 4.39 during Friday nights on the field drills.

Only two backs weighing over 225 pounds to run 4.45 since 2014 is New York Giants star running back Saquon Barkley and now Jonathan Taylor. Keep in mind, a Pat Shurmur led team selected Barkley with their second-overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft so could he have a similar level of interest in Taylor?

The Broncos had private meetings with multiple backs during the Combine so it is safe to assume they will select one at somepoint during the draft. All the backs they met with were bigger backs as well and while Taylor was not among the group, he fits the mold they appear to be looking at.

I think we’ll see a back drafted by the Broncos by the end of the third round during the 2020 NFL Draft.
