FAIRFIELD — Rodriguez High got off to s slow start but eventually earned a 3-0 victory over Armijo to move closer to the Monticello Empire League girls soccer title at the latter’s Brownlee Field, Friday.
Ariana Chavez put the Mustangs (10-2-4, 7-0-1) on the board with a goal in the 37th minute off a pass from Giselle Rivera.
Two minutes later, Talyssa Tucker made it 2-0 with an assist from Angelita Chavez.
The visitors rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 57th minute by Trina Lim that assisted by Samantha Valdes.
“We were not the most crisp, especially in the first half,” Rodriguez coach Josh Levine said. “We took a lot of shots and they went wide, I felt like we were rushing things, we weren’t being patient. I thought we played better the second half. We’re going to need to play better in the last two games to really seal the deal.”
Armijo coach Regina McGee praised the play of her team in general and that of her goalkeepers Adriana Mendoza and Lilliana Fenn, who made “great saves,” specifically.
“The score doesn’t attest to the tremendous play by all,” the coach said. “Armijo looked very organized and had a few opportunities to score, but didn’t capitalize. High school soccer is so different than competitive soccer, since we have such a limited time to grow. Injuries have really plagued us early, and in these short eight weeks, we are finally playing collectively as a team. The coaches and I definitely look forward to seeing this team build into it’s potential in the next few years.”
Rodriguez won the JV game 3-0.
The Mustangs host Vacaville, while Armijo welcomes Vanden on Monday, both for Senior Night.
