Soccer roundup: Terra Linda, Branson boys score late to save their seasons - Marin Independent Journal

Ruthwick Challagonda sat out long stretches of the MCAL boys soccer final on Saturday while battling an illness. The same ailment was still affecting him as he sat out the first half of Terra Linda’s North Coast Section Division III first-round playoff game against Kennedy (Fremont).

With the Trojans trailing in the second half and the season slipping away, Challagonda came in and scored in overtime to lift TL to a 2-1 victory on Wednesday.

Freshman Roan Goertz scored with about 12 minutes to play to tie the game, then Challagonda got the golden goal about five minutes into the first overtime. The No. 2 Trojans (13-2-4) advance to face No. 10 Albany, which defeated No. 7 Marin Academy 2-0 on Wednesday. All NCS soccer quarterfinals are scheduled for Saturday.

  • Paris Manthoulis scored a hat trick as No. 10 Branson rallied from two goals down for a dramatic 3-2 road win against No. 7 Berean Christian in the D-IV playoffs. The Bulls (5-16-2) trailed 2-0 with 15 minutes to play. Manthoulis scored in the 65th and 75th minutes to force overtime then netted again in the 83rd minute to win the game. The Bulls advance to face No. 2 seed Kennedy (Richmond).
  • Erez Weitzman scored twice to lead No. 2 Redwood to a 3-0 home win against No. 15 Arroyo in the D-II playoffs. Ethan Kahn had the other goal for the Giants (13-3-5), who await the winner between No. 7 Windsor and No. 10 Casa Grande.
  • Samy Wahab scored the game’s only goal as No. 3 Tam picked up a 1-0 victory against No. 14 Concord in the D-II playoffs. Otto Ryerson provided the assist as Wahab scored in the final 15 minutes. Tam advances to face the winner between No. 6 Mt. Eden and No. 11 Northgate.
  • Maga Escobar and Alex Gomez scored to lift No. 9 San Rafael to a 2-1 road victory against No. 8 Miramonte in the D-III playoffs. Acer Cristea and Byron De Leon had assists for the Bulldogs (11-7-3), who face the winner between No. 1 Piner and No. 16 Elsie Allen.
  • No. 12 Drake lost a tight 1-0 road game against No. 5 De Anza.

Girls soccer

Calista Poulos scored a pair of first-half goals to get Marin Academy rolling toward a 5-0 victory against No. 15 Berean Christian in the D-IV playoffs. MA (17-2-0) led 2-0 at the break with Ella Klingelhofer and Lucinda Anderson getting assists.

Sophia Byrne, Anderson and Meredith Stais scored inside the first 20 minutes of the second half. The No. 2 Wildcats, who have won 17 games in a row, advance to face the winner between No. 7 Salesian and No. 10 Sonoma Academy in the D-IV playoffs.

  • Zoe Shepherd scored on a free kick from 25 yards out, curling it into the top-right corner to put the finishing touches on a 2-0 win for Marin Catholic in the D-IV playoffs. The third-seeded Wildcats (11-8-0) also got a goal from Rachel Dougherty to take down No. 14 Bentley. MC faces the winner between No. 6 University and No. 11 St. Mary’s.
  • Grace Bouton had a pair of assists to help lift No. 3 Redwood to a 2-1 win against No. 14 Las Lomas in the D-II playoffs. The Giants (17-2-3) got a third-minute goal from Shannon Watridge and a goal with about 10 minutes left in the first half from Mia Curtaz. Redwood awaits the winner between No. 6 Bishop O’Dowd and No. 11 Newark Memorial.
  • Kirsten Whetstone scored to get Tam rolling toward a 3-0 victory against No. 15 Arroyo in the D-II playoffs. Ellie Ryerson scored to double Tam’s lead then Thalia Greenberg capped the scoring. The Red-tailed Hawks (17-1-2) advance to the quarterfinals to face either No. 7 Casa Grande or No. 10 Alameda.
  • Maxine St. Sure scored an early goal for No. 9 San Rafael and the defense made it stand up in a 1-0 win against No. 8 Sonoma Valley in the D-III playoffs. The Bulldogs (7-11-3) move into the quarterfinals for an all-Marin matchup against No. 1 Branson (14-3-3) at 1 p.m. in Ross.
