Twins could pull out of Mookie Betts trade in Red Sox disaster - New York Post

The Minnesota Twins could pull out of the Mookie Betts blockbuster trade this weekend, leaving the Boston Red Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers to figure out the complicated deal themselves.

The Post’s Joel Sherman reported the Twins have asked for a resolution by Saturday to the three-team deal, which is slated to see Minnesota acquire Dodgers pitcher Kenta Maeda and send top prospect and pitcher Brusdar Graterol to the Red Sox.

The deal, which is centered around Betts being moved to the Dodgers, materialized Tuesday, but an ensuing medical review revealed concerns about Graterol’s right pitching arm.

That led Boston to ask the Twins for another top-end prospect, which has caused a bump in the trade talks.

The Twins’ role in the deal was to help make the money work between the Red Sox and Dodgers — in addition to the 27-year-old AL MVP, Boston was sending the Dodgers pitcher David Price, who is owed $96 million over the next three seasons.

Betts, who won the AL MVP and World Series in 2018, agreed to a $27 million salary for 2020 (a record for an arbitration-eligible player).

The Red Sox, who are in the middle of a mini-rebuild, began shopping Betts once it became clear he likely would enter free agency.

There is speculation Betts could earn up to $400 million on the open market, which would make him the second highest-paid baseball player behind Mike Trout (12 years, $426 million deal with the Angels).
