On Tuesday, the Brooklyn Nets sent out a press release announcing that four players had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Following the disclosure, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported “Brooklyn tested the team upon returning from San Francisco and results came back today. Nets paid out of pocket to a private company to conduct tests. One player awoke with some aches today; rest have experienced no symptoms.”

And that isn’t sitting well with New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who shared his frustration Tuesday on Twitter.
“We wish them a speedy recovery. But, with all due respect, an entire NBA team should NOT get tested for COVID-19 while there are critically ill patients waiting to be tested. Tests should not be for the wealthy, but for the sick.”
New York City is a hot zone for COVID-19, with almost 1,000 cases and at least 10 deaths in the five boroughs.
The Nets’ announcement raises to seven the number of current NBA players diagnosed with the coronavirus: Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert, Jazz teammate Donovan Mitchell, Detroit Pistons forward Christian Wood, and the four members of the Nets, including Kevin Durant.
ESPN reports the Los Angeles Lakers “will be tested Wednesday after learning of the Nets’ positive tests ... The Lakers were the last opponents of the Nets before games were suspended.”
Also on Tuesday, the Ottawa Senators announced the first NHL player had been diagnosed with COVID-19.
The New York Post reports the Nets could be to blame for the Ottawa Senators’ player contracting the coronavirus.
The Senators played the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center on March 11 — one day after the Nets played the Lakers at the same arena. The hockey website, The Fourth Period, reported that the Senators used the same visitors locker room as the Nets.
Two baseball players have tested positive and both are minor leaguers for the New York Yankees at the team’s facilities in Tampa, Fla.
