The Marshall High School boys soccer team, which had won the CIF Southern Section Division 6 championship last year and was hoping to earn a second consecutive title after making the leap to Division 5, gave up three goals in a five minute span in the second half, and was no match for host Oak Hills in Saturday’s championship

Chris Gutierrez scored two goals three minutes apart in the 31st and 34th minutes and Oak Hills added another minutes later and the rout was on.

Oak Hills went on to win 4-0 to take home the championship as the Eagles (17-2-3) finished on a sour note after another good season.

“I wanted to score really bad, I told my coaches to give me some time and I will put in the work to score,” Gutierrez said of his two goals. “It was time to show everyone what I can do.”

Just two minutes after his second goal, Gutierrez’ teammate, Luis Castillo finished a loose ball in the box past the goalkeeper to make it 3-0.

Defensively, the Bulldogs were able to bottle Marshall up at midfield and limit the number of true attacks on goal. When a Marshall attacker did slip through the cracks, goalkeeper Bryant Sheffield was there to maintain the shutout.

Both Oak Hills and Marshall are moving on to the CIF Regional Soccer Championships, with round one beginning on Tuesday. The playoff brackets will be released on Sunday.
