Here’s what else we know about the shooting, the aftermath, and those involved:
• Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in the Dominican capital city of Santo Domingo, when a gunman who had gotten off a motorcycle approached from behind around 8:50 p.m. and shot him in the lower back from a close range, according to the Associated Press.

• Surveillance video posted on social media by a Dominican newspaper, El Nuevo Diario, appeared to show Ortiz collapse from the chair he was sitting in as people around him flee.
• Ortiz was taken to Santo Domingo’s Abel Gonzalez clinic, where he underwent surgery. The Red Sox, in a statement released early Monday, said they were offering the Ortiz family “all available resources to aid in his recovery.”
• In a video interview posted by CDN 37, a man at the scene of the shooting said the bullet entered Ortiz’s back and exited his stomach. His father, Leo Ortiz, told reporters early Monday that his son was expected to make a complete recovery and that no damage was done to of his major arteries or organs.
• Police believe the bullet that struck Ortiz also wounded Jhoel López, a Dominican TV host who was with the retired Red Sox star at the bar. López’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to his wife, Liza Blanco, who is also a TV personality.

• López, who hosts a late night Dominican show called “Me Gusta De Noche,” often posts on social media about spending time with Ortiz, who he has referred to as “mi hermano,” or “my brother.”
• Another unidentified person was wounded in Sunday’s shooting, according to police, but they would not detail that person’s injuries.
• The news of Ortiz’s shooting prompted an outpouring of support from former teammates and former opponents alike. Hall-of-Famer Pedro Martinez posted an undated photo of himself hugging Ortiz and wrote that he was “at peach knowing you [sic] out of danger,” while former Yankee Alex Rodriguez tweeted that he was “anxiously waiting for more news.”
• The alleged gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar, according to police, and authorities were waiting to question him about the incident until he underwent treatment for his injuries.
• The Dial Bar and Lounge sits amid a busy nightlife district on Venezuela Avenue in eastern Santo Domingo, according to the AP, and Ortiz was known for spending time at the area’s dance clubs and pricy bars. Ortiz, who lives in Miami with his wife, Tiffany, and two of their three children, also spends part of the year at the home he owns in the Dominican.
• Police did not identify a motive in the shooting and Leo Ortiz told reporters he did not know why his son was shot. Authorities are trying to determine if Ortiz was the target of the ambush and although early reports indicated the ambush may have been an attempted robbery, police have not confirmed that.
