Boys soccer preview: Non-Public A favorite and teams to watch - NJ.com

Favorite: Delbarton

The Green Wave will be led by Providence recruit Brendan McSorley, who had 13 goals and 13 assists last season. Its offense should have plenty of fire power when you add in senior forward Ivan Scotto and junior midfielder Curt Calov. Delbarton did graduate some nice talent, but should be able to field a strong team. Delbarton went 21-1-1 last season with its lone loss coming in the Non-Public A final in overtime to Christian Brothers.

CONTENDERS

Bergen Catholic

Bergen Catholic lost just three games as it went 13-3 last season. It returns a very good player in junior Jake Sweeney, who had seven goals and four assists last season. It also brings back senior midfielder Allen Villafranca and sophomore goalkeeper Ryan Langberg.

Bishop Eustace

Lorenzo Carletti and Drew Ruehlicke will both be key returners for an impressive Bishop Eustace frontline this season. After battling to a .500 season a year ago, Bishop Eustace should be one of the top teams in South Jersey, Non-Public A and will look to keep pace with CBA and St. Augustine for a sectional title.

CBA's Luke Pascarella (20) wins the game with :19 left in double overtime on this free kick during the NJSIAA Non-Public A boys soccer final between Delbarton and CBA at Kean University.

Christian Brothers

This will be a new-look Christian Brothers team this season after graduating a ton of production from last year’s state championship team, but the expectations will still be there. Luke Pascarella, the hero from that overtime win over Delbarton last November, will return and Connor Anderko will be a force in the back for the Colts. CBA should still be the favorite in South Jersey, Non-Public A and its brand of soccer should enable this team to progress throughout the season.

Don Bosco Prep

Don Bosco Prep will rely on center midfielder Jarec Morlote, a Messiah University recruit, to lead the way this season. He will be joined by attacking players Connor Brooks, Ryan O’Byrne, Colin MacKenna, Alex Mercado and Dylan Estevez to make up what should be a potent offense. The Ironmen went 12-6-1 last season. Bosco fell to Seton Hall Prep in PKs in the North Jersey, Non-Public A semifinals.

Pingry

A disappointing finish to last season should provide plenty of motivation for an experienced Pingry team this season. Pranav Jha and Will Bugliari will headline a team that should contend as one of the best in Somerset County and with hopes of challenging the powers of Delbarton and Seton Hall Prep in Non-Public A.

Aidan Dunphy of Seton Hall Prep has been a force in Essex County the last two season.

Aidan Dunphy of Seton Hall Prep has been a force in Essex County the last two season.

Seton Hall Prep

Seton Hall Prep has some serious firepower with senior midfielder/forward Aidan Dunphy (11 goals, 15 assists) and junior forward Lucas Ross (19 goals, 16 assists) leading the way. The two All-Staters are joined by All-State defender Jason Pereira. The Pirates went 18-2-5 last season and fell to Delbarton in PKs in the North Jersey, Non-Public A final.

St. Augustine

St. Augustine will return a strong core of players this season with hopes of challenging CBA in South Jersey, Non-Public A. Kevin Witkoski and Antonio Matos will return as the Hermits’ two leading scorers for a team that is widely regarded as, perhaps, the best in South Jersey.

St. Peter’s Prep

St. Peter’s Prep has a strong group of seniors back led by All-state midfielder Antonio Callegari, who had 20 goals and 14 assists last season. Its backline will be led by Matthew Jasinski, Jacob Bacha and Kevin Diaz, while Matias Carrion will play a key role on the wing. St. Peter’s Prep went 16-4-1 last season. It fell to Don Bosco Prep in the North Jersey, Non-Public A quarterfinals.
