Soccer action is where we will start our review of Central Mountain sports. The Wildcat boys were at Mifflinburg on Tuesday and earned a nice 4-1 victory over the “other” Wildcats. Two goals each from Trey Gentzel and Nate Brinker propelled the CM boys to the win. It was a much different story on Thursday at Malinak Stadium as they hosted PHAC power Selinsgrove. The visitors overwhelmed their hosts in that one and defeated the Wildcats by a 6-0 score. The loss dropped CM to 3-4 on the season. Asked about the 1-1 week, coach Billy Hook had this to say, “We found a great balance Tuesday versus Mifflinburg, scoring from different areas on the field, creating chances from the outside backs. Thursday we ran into a top PHAC contender in Selinsgrove, and we struggled to match their work rate.” He went on to describe the loss to the Seals as, “A bump in the road.”

The girl’s soccer team was busy in playing three times. After hosting Shikellamy on Monday evening and dropping a 3-0 contest, they traveled to Selinsgrove on Wednesday and simply were overwhelmed by the Seals in an 8-0 loss. On Saturday, coach Jeff Brinker and his team headed west on I-80 for a match-up with the DuBois Beavers, and a good trip it was. CM displayed more aggressiveness than at any point so far this season and rode it to their first win of the season, 3-2. The CM goals came from Avery Baker and Abby Brinker (2). Make no mistake this was a complete-team effort. In addition to the aggressiveness, the ‘Cats passed the ball well and controlled the tempo of the game for the first 60 minutes. Both of DuBois’ goals came late in the contest. Will the victory propel CM to success moving forward? We won’t have to wait long to find out as Altoona comes to Mill Hall tonight.

Volleyball is finding victories hard to come by in the early portion of the season. However, that in no way should be an indication of the progress that this team is making nor how close they are to breaking through and being a consistent force. On Monday, they were defeated at West Branch by a 3-0 score. Just two points decided two of the games in that matchup. Likewise, when CM hosted Philipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday, they lost by a 3-1 score but again, one game was decided by two points and another by just three. Coach Scott Garman had this to say, “The team didn’t have a great week in terms of wins and losses, but the girls are making progress across the board. The serving intensity, defensive prowess and offensive firepower are improving on a daily basis. We lost two close matches. We just need to continue to learn to close games out when it gets tight.” The coach also directed a special shout-out to “the student section at the P/O match as they were awesome and their support was incredible!”

Now here’s something we’ve heard before, golf dominates. Yes, on Monday in a PHAC match at White Deer against Montoursville, Williamsport, Shikellamy and Selinsgrove, the ‘Cats swept the competition. The victory over Montoursville was a sweet one for sure as the ‘Cats were dropped just a week ago by the Warriors by just two strokes. This time the ‘Cats fairly easily bested the Warriors. Leading the way for CM was Jason Floruss who shot a 9-hole score of 39. Floruss again led the Cats to victory on Wednesday with an 18-hole 87 as his team easily defeated BEA at Sky Top. Zach Somers was right behind with an 88.

For the tennis team, it was just one match, a 5 to 0 victory over league foe Mifflinburg on Tuesday. The No, 2 singles matchup was the most competitive of the day. CM’s Carolina Carpenetti ultimately downed her opponent by 6-2 and 7-5 scores. The win ups CM’s season mark to 7-1.

The cross country teams were in action on Tuesday at Jersey Shore. Top runners for the ‘Cats were Michael Cashwell and Fatima Kaba. On Thursday, the runners were at Hollidaysburg and were led by Gino Serafini and Maddie Jones.

Friday night football saw the Wildcats on the road to take on the Red Raiders of Bellefonte. The Red Raiders had too much offense for CM and the result was not a favorable one as the ‘Cats fell by a score of 41 to 14. A few bright spots for the Wildcats were the continuing emergence of slot receiver, Peyton Johnson, who’s becoming Quarterback Zane Probst’s favorite target and sophomore backup QB, Brett Gerlach who continues to make the most of his chances when his number is called upon. The experience that he is getting now will be invaluable in the future.

Team of the Week: The golf team’s redemption win over Montoursville earns them this week’s honor.

Athlete of the Week: Performing under pressure is a quality trait for an athlete to have. Carolina Carpenetti’s gritty win on the courts on Tuesday stands out. Likewise, McKenzie Hanna demonstrated solid play for the volleyball team in their two matches. Specifically, her passing efficiency was quality as was her play at the net. These two athletes share the honors this week.

Alumni News: CM alum and current LHU cross-country standout Laurel Moyer placed second overall out of 158 runners in a DII/DIII challenge at Kutztown University on Saturday. Elsewhere, Sloane Tressler is a freshman at Penn College and starting for the Lady Wildcat soccer team.

Looking Ahead: On Wednesday, tennis hosts a tournament at the Gibson courts as they welcome Mifflin County, Indiana and Altoona. That provides an opportunity to see if their prowess against PHAC competition translates to victories against non-league opponents. Volleyball hosts Hollidaysburg on Thursday. Will THE SECTION be rocking? We’ll see. Boy’s soccer hosting Williamsport on the same evening should be very competitive. Football welcomes Clearfield on Friday night. Finally, Saturday the girl’s soccer team will battle Juniata at Malinak Stadium.
