The English boys soccer team grabbed its first win of the season Saturday, knocking St. Mary’s for a 5-1 victory in the consolation game of the City Tournament at Manning Field.

Chris Lazo paced the Bulldogs with two goals. Ryan Lima, Kelly Nwachukwu and Yahir Hernandez scored one goal apiece.

“It was a great win,” English coach Kerry King said. “The kids have worked really hard during the preseason. We lost to Tech on PK’s in the first game and that was hard. We were struggling to score in the first half. It was a very satisfying win for us.

“It was kind of like the first game against Tech. We were snakebitten in the first half. We continued to work hard in the second half and the floodgates opened. We played really well in the second half.”

Freshman goalie Jack Macaniello made three saves

“Jack has made a big impact on our team,” King said. “He’s a very competitive kid for a freshman. He’s a big part of our team. He brings intensity and leadership.”

English (1-0-1) hosts Saugus Monday (6) for its first NEC contest of the fall.

“I’m very optimistic about our season,” King said. “I feel we have a solid team this year. I know we’ll be competitive. As long as we play hard, we go out there and play together, I think we’ll compete with anybody.”

For St. Mary’s, Jackson Nickolau scored the lone goal. The Spartans (0-2) visit Malden Catholic Thursday (6).

St. John’s 3, Xavier (CT) 1

At Xaviver, the Eagles won the Furtensburg Cup. St. John’s improved to 2-0 on the season and welcomes Everett Monday (4) in a non-conference tilt.

Revere 6, Methuen 1

The Patriots improved to 3-0 on the season.

GIRLS SOCCER

Classical 4, Tech 0

The Classical girls soccer team earned its first win of the season in the City Tournament consolation game at Manning Field.

Senior captain Chloe Kebreau, junior Jessica Page, sophomore Kenzie McLaren and freshman Ava Thurman each scored for the Rams.

Ava Correnti also had a standout game with an assist on a corner kick and forcing a hand ball that resulted in Page’s penalty kick goal.

“This was one of those games where everyone chipped in,” Classical coach Mike Schena. “We had a senior, junior, sophomore and freshman all score and scored on a direct kick, corner and penalty kick. Everything we’ve been working on came together.”

Classical (1-1) will hope to keep rolling Monday (7) at Salem.

“I’m proud of the girls and all the work they put in,” Schena said. “It’s just a start and only one game but I wouldn’t want to be coaching any other group.”

Tech (0-2) hosts Chelsea Monday (7:30).

Beverly 1, Wilmington 0

First-year Panthers head coach Sam Charest, formerly an assistant coach at St. Mary’s, earned her first win.

The Panthers visit Swampscott Monday (4) in a NEC clash at Blocksidge Field.

JUNIOR VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY

Fenwick 7, St. Mary’s 1

At Donaldson Stadium, Pej’ae Parent scored the program’s first goal as the Spartans made their debut.
