
The Dominican University men’s soccer team began the PacWest-CCAA Kickoff Challenge with an exciting match against Humboldt State, with the Jacks rallying back to win 4-3 in overtime.
The Penguins (0-1) got a Luke Raley goal on a pass from Roberto Garcia to start off the scoring in the 29th minute only for the Jacks (1-0) to get the equalizer from Dalton Rice, who also scored the game-tying goal in the second half.
Raley scored again on a penalty kick in the second half. The Jacks won on Gus Baxter’s penalty kick goal 33 seconds into overtime.
Girls volleyball
Audrey Nelson led the way with 15 kills and five blocks as Terra Linda fought back out of an early hole before falling to Sonoma Valley in five, 25-10, 25-12, 16-25, 23-25, 15-8. Abby Hakewell added 12 kills for TL (2-3) while Alana Slanec had 27 digs and six aces.
“This team has a lot of fight in them and it just took us a while to adjust to what Sonoma Valley was doing,” TL coach Mandy Torres said. “Then we were able to adjust our offense to their defense. … We started doing different sets and moving the ball around to different places and had success that way.”
- Tam moved back into the win column with a 25-17, 25-9, 25-17 victory over visiting Eureka on Friday. Olivia Smith led the way with 14 kills, two aces and two blocks while Kayli Morris added 12 assists and two aces and Amelia Sandgren had six aces and 17 service points in serving 25 attempts. Tam moves to 9-1 on the year.
- Ramona Dewane and Grace Badlam combined for 24 kills, 15 digs and five aces to lift Marin Academy to a 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 victory against Lick-Wilmerding. Mary Badlam anchored the serve-receive and contributed 10 digs, three aces and three assists for the Wildcats (5-3).
- San Rafael topped Ygnacio Valley 25-9, 25-13, 25-19 on Thursday. Ayiana Scott led the team with seven kills while Mary Healy had five. Landy Monitto and Mariana Stanley both raked in points with long service runs and several aces, with four and three aces, respectively. Stanley had 12 assists and Sati Brewer added five.
Field hockey
Lili Smith scored Tam’s goal in a 1-1 tie with Lick-Wilmerding on Friday.
Girls tennis
The No. 1 doubles team of Casey Johnston and Natalie Buerger swept their match as San Marin topped crosstown rival Novato Friday, 6-1. Hannah Lam-Truong topped Ella MacDonald at No. 1 singles. The Hornets picked up their lone victory at No. 2 singles, with Peyton Grafeld beating Michelle Ferrua 6-1, 6-2.
College cross country
Dominican men’s and women’s cross country each took second to open its season Friday afternoon in the Holy Names Cross Country Invite at Hayward Regional Shoreline Park in Hayward. William Jessup won both men’s and women’s races.
Freshman Jacob Potere led the Penguin men’s team to a program first as he finished second with a time of 27:43.9 followed closely by fellow freshman Stefan Mueller with a time of 27:53.4. Senior Buay Deng with a time of 28:12.2. It was the first time the Dominican men have had three top-5 finishers in a meet in its Division II era. Seniors Brock Albee and Jorden Tahquechi finished 13th and 15th, respectively, while freshman Deyne Jurie finished 16th in the men’s race.
Sophomore Breanna Herrera led the way on the women’s side finishing in 27:37.3 to take fifth overall. Sophomore Emma Digman was close behind with a time of 28:01.3 to take sixth. Junior Tesia De Leon was 11th while junior Adela Damian was 12th and senior Kelsey Pontius added a 14th place finish. The top four finishers for the Penguins were separated by only 1:08.6.
Women’s soccer
Dominican University’s women’s soccer team opened the season with a 3-0 shutout of Menlo College late Thursday. The Penguins got goals from Ana Herrera and Sofia Odron in the first half and Victoria Avina in the second half. Kaitlyn Haub and Aiden Marquez recorded assists on the two first-half goals.
