Oregon State soccer scored two goals within 62 seconds late in the first half Thursday night in a 3-1 win over Arizona State at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium.

McKenzie Weinert, Oregon State's scoring leader, cut inside and dribbled to the middle top of the box before firing a shot past ASU goalie Giulia Cascapera at 38:00 for her ninth goal. Weinert then lobbed a ball not cleared by Taylor Culver close to the net, where freshman Abby Schwartz slid a rebound into the net at 39:02.

The second goal opportunity started off a misplaced goal kick by an ASU position player.

"It was very poor defending," ASU coach Graham Winkworth said. "Somebody's just got to get in there and smash it away.

"I hate it when I have to say a team wanted it more than us. That's something that's inexcusable. We didn't win enough challenges, we were soft in the tackle. That's not technique and skill. That's passion and heart, and we need more of it."

Schwartz scored again in the 70th minute, her fifth goal, on a sharp angle shot in close.

ASU played better over the final 15-20 minutes, scoring in the 82nd minute on a shot from inside the box by freshman Dai Williams, her fifth goal.

ASU's Nicole Douglas missed wide on a short scoring chance off a pass from Lorato Sargeant in the 19th minute when the game still was scoreless.

Marlene Schimmer, ASU's second leading scorer, did not start and played just 27 minutes. "She had a different role," Winkworth said. "If she wants the role she had before then she knows what she has to show in training and game on a daily basis and she's got to work hard."

Oregon State (10-3-2, 2-3-2 Pac-12) had a 14-10 edge in shots, 6-4 on goal. ASU dropped to 6-7-3, 0-5-2 and is winless over its last eight games.

The Sun Devils will play their final home game at noon Sunday against Oregon (4-6-5, 0-5-2) while honoring seniors Kylie Miniefield, Christina Edwards, Adriana Orozco, Sydney Day and Sargeant.

Oregon lost 5-2 Thursday at Arizona.
