
Catarina Macario scored her 30th goal of the season in the first half and Maya Doms added her fourth goal in the second half as the top-ranked Stanford women’s soccer team beat visiting Penn State 2-0 in an NCAA tournament third-round match Sunday.
The Cardinal (21-1), who have won 16 consecutive matches, advance to host a quarterfinal against BYU (21-0-1) on Friday.
Penn State (17-7-1) was limited to one shot in the match.
“Penn State is a quality opponent and we knew that, coming into today,” Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. “I applaud our student-athletes for the composure, focus and execution.”
• USC’s Natalie Ward scored in the 41st minute and Carondelet-Concord alum Kaylie Collins earned her sixth shutout of the season as the host Trojans (17-4-1) prevailed 1-0 over Santa Clara (15-6-2) in the third round of the NCAA women’s tournament.

Stanford men survive stiff test
After host Stanford and Seattle played to a 1-1 tie through two overtimes, Andrew Thomas stopped four out of five penalty kicks as the Cardinal (14-2-3) outlasted the Redhawks (15-4-4) to advance to the third round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament.
Tanner Beason scored in regulation before Logan Panchot and Beason connected in the five-round shootout.
The Cardinal next will face Wake Forest.
• Rodney Michael scored two goals to lead UC Santa Barbara (14-4-4) to a 4-0 win over host St. Mary’s (16-2) in an NCAA second-round match.
Water polo: Tyler Abransmon scored four goals and Quinn Woodhead had three as second-seeded Stanford beat fourth-seeded Cal 17-11 in Berkeley to earn its seventh Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s championship.\
Stanford (19-2) will begin play in the NCAA championships in Stockton on Dec. 7.
Safak Simsek scored four goals to pace the Bears (14-11).
Tennis: In Madrid, Rafael Nadal beat Denis Shapovalov 6-3, 7-6 (7) to give Spain its sixth Davis Cup title with a win over first-time finalist Canada.
Roberto Bautista Agut, playing three days after the death of his father, had given Spain a 1-0 lead by beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-6 (3), 6-3 in the first singles match.
“For me, what he did was something almost inhuman,” Nadal said of Bautista Agut. “I don’t know how to explain it. It will be an example for the rest of my life. He had to leave, then his dad died, then he came back and practiced with us yesterday, and today he was ready again to play at a very high level. It was something incredible.”
Pro football: Andrew Harris was named the Grey Cup MVP as he ran for 134 yards and a touchdown and caught a scoring pass in the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ 33-12 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Calgary, Alberta, for the CFL title.
Skiing: In Levi, Finland, Henrik Kristoffersen edged first-run leader Clement Noel to win the first World Cup men’s slalom of the season.
It was the Norwegian’s 16th career victory in the discipline, but the first since January 2018.
“After the first run, I thought: ‘Seven-tenths on Noel, that’s a bit too much,’” said Kristoffersen, who trailed the Frenchman by 0.68 of a second after the opening leg but beat his rival by 0.09 of a second thanks to a near-flawless second run.
