It was just one game against a bad team, but the Giants’ young defenders hope Sunday’s 36-20 win over the Dolphins can springboard them into big things next year.
Rookie outside linebacker Oshane Ximines told NJ Advance that fans “might not see the results now, but just know that guys are busting their ass every day. Eventually that s--- is going to click. I’m ready to see how it comes along. I think we can play way better than this. I think we can be even more dominant.”

The Giants held the Dolphins to 3 of 13 on third downs and 384 yards. Second-year cornerback Sam Beal also had a tackle for a safety. So while it wasn’t a hugely dominant defensive showing, yardage-wise, this defense will take it.
The Dolphins tacked on a garbage-time touchdown with 1:54 left, so 20 points allowed wasn’t fully indicative of the Giants’ performance.
The Giants entered Sunday ranked 25th in Football Outsiders’ defensive DVOA ratings. The Dolphins were 29th in offensive DVOA. The Giants’ final two opponents, Washington and Philadelphia, entered Sunday 31st and 14th in offensive DVOA.
So there will be a chance for the Giants’ defense to play well again next week in Washington against rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins, in another battle of two underwhelming teams.
Beal, for one, can’t wait for more opportunities, after struggling with injuries for most of his first two seasons.
“Give me a whole year, man, and you’ll see a different Sam Beal,” Beal said. “And give this whole defense a year just to play with each other. It’s going to be nice. The Giants will have something to look forward to for next year.”
Defensive lineman Leonard Williams is a pending free agent, so he might not return along with Ximines and Beal in 2020. But he likes what he sees from this young, developing defense.
“I think this is definitely trending upward,” Williams, a fifth-year pro, told NJ Advance Media. “The last few weeks, I’ve been feeling a different energy from the defense. That definitely is a trending-upward type of thing.”
