SEASON STORYLINES

Silly seedings: Based on last season’s playoffs, don’t trust the seedings for accuracy. Notably, 10th-seeded West Hills took the San Diego Section Division III title with a 2-1 victory over No. 8 El Centro Central. Also, No. 9 Mission Vista won the D-IV crown. Count on the wackiness of soccer and the less-than-reliable power rankings for making postseason brackets questionable.

Fabulous Falcons: Can Torrey Pines mount another playoff run despite the graduation of nine senior starters? It helps having senior Nick Bello back in goal along with classmate Cody Black, a midfielder/defender. With 10 new starters last season, the Falcons prevailed in the Open Division for their first section crown since 2012. They subsequently reached the Southern California Regional Division I final as a follow-up to winning the D-II title the previous year.

Wonderful Wolverines: Will last season’s late surge bring momentum to Westview this year? In the process of mounting a seven-game winning streak, the Wolverines won the D-I section crown and reached the D-II regional final. Due back is senior Lorenzo Perolone, whose overtime goal decided a 2-1 section final triumph over Poway. Westview (15-9-5) earlier finished fourth in the five-team Palomar League.

Powerful Pirates: What’s next for Oceanside? The Pirates won the D-II title for their second crown in four years. Now comes a move to D-I with the Open Division a possibility. Due back is senior George Silva, whose team-high 13 goals on the season included the only score in a 1-0 final victory over Mission Hills. Also, the Pirates again rely on senior Christian Martinez in goal.

Of further note: Hoover, which suffered a 1-0 semifinal loss to Oceanside as the top-seeded team last season, also steps up to D-I this season behind junior Melvin Alvarado, an all-section second-team choice a year ago. … Reigning D-V champion Classical moves to D-IV, paced by sophomore Owen Michaels, who recorded the game-winning goal in last year’s final. … Set to assume the D-V throne could be North County High Tech, the No. 8 seed, which advanced to the final last year.
