
Ruthwick Challagonda had a pair of goals and Jason Hsu provided the winner as Terra Linda High boys soccer team rallied for a 3-2 road victory against Branson on Saturday.
The Trojans (1-0-1, 1-0-1 MCAL) trailed 2-1 at the half before scoring the last two to secure all three points. James Daly and Connor Thorp had goals for the Bulls (0-2-0, 0-2-0) while Josh Batteer and Gavin Taub provided the assists.
- Igor Costa and Hugo Perez scored first-half goals to help Novato (2-0-0, 2-0-0) ascend to the top of the table following a 2-1 win against Redwood (2-1-0, 1-1-0). Costa scored in the 19th minute and Perez netted in the 30th minute for the Hornets. Alexander Nilsson scored the goal for Redwood, assisted by Shawn Clarke.
- Nicolas Millhorn scored on a penalty kick for Marin Catholic (0-0-1, 0-0-1) with about 15 minutes to play but San Rafael found an equalizer in the final seven minutes as the teams settled for a 1-1 draw. Denison Calderon put an initial shot on frame for the Bulldogs (1-0-1, 1-0-1) but MC’s goalie made the save. Jesler Escobar pounced on the rebound to earn a point for San Rafael.
- Tam got goals from four different players to secure a 4-2 victory against San Marin (0-3-0, 0-2-0). Leo Boyle, Sammy Wahab, Noah Whitaker and Ben Southern netted for the Red-tailed Hawks (1-2-0, 1-1-0). Wahab and Schuyler Heoberichts provided assists. Jordan Kennedy and Kaleb Ryan scored for the Mustangs and goalie Gregory Brown had some big saves in the second half.
- Conor Dunn and Noah Gardner provided goals for Drake (1-0-2) in a 2-2 tie against Piner in the rain on Friday night.
Boys basketball
Lucas Prongos scored 21 points en route to being named the MVP at the Piedmont tournament, which Branson won following a 50-47 victory over the hosts.
The Bulls (4-0) trailed by 15 late in the second quarter before making a trio of 3-pointers before the half to get back into it. With four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Bulls had built an eight-point lead.
Miles Keefe — named to the all-tournament team — added 10 points for the Bulls and Connor Maas helped key the turnaround with four points and six rebounds. Branson knocked Piedmont out of the North Coast Section playoffs last season.
- Dylan Reed earned all-tournament honors after his 14-point performance in Tam’s 64-54 win over Monte Vista. The victory secured a third-place finish in the Russ Peterich Viking Classic for the Red-tailed Hawks, who also received key contributions from Xavier Williams (12 points), Tyler Reed (11 points), Sean McCarthy (10 points) and Connor Jenkins (nine points).
- Novato (5-1) advanced to the championship game of its own tournament but fell in the final, 74-51 against Piner. Jason Carpenter scored 23 points and pulled down five rebounds en route to making the all-tournament team along with teammate Neil Knight.
- Grey Snyder scored 13 points and was named to the San Rafael all-tournament team as the Panthers picked up a 48-38 win against Frontier. Parker Bizjack added seven points and seven rebounds for San Domenico (5-1).
- San Rafael fell victim to a hot-shooting Acalanes team in a 59-49 loss which marked the end of the Dawg Classic. Hayden Hattenbach led the Bulldogs (2-3, 0-1 MCAL) with 16 points.
Girls basketball
San Domenico picked up a 36-34 win against Ukiah in its final game at the Sonoma Valley tournament. Alexa Dal Porto scored 12 points and played strong defense, according to coach Stephanie Buechner. Jada Shore scored 10 points and had six rebounds. San Domenico sophomore Keira Engler was named to the all-tournament team.
- Emily Sullivan hit five 3-pointers en route to a 19-point night as San Marin fell 58-31 against Montgomery in the Dragon Classic championship game at Sonoma Valley High. Sullivan hit 17 3-pointers over four games this week and was named to the all-tournament team with teammate Keeley Wright.
Girls soccer
Grace Bouton netted a hat trick, accounting for three of Redwood’s first four goals as the Giants rolled to an 8-1 win against Novato (1-3-0, 0-2-0). Kayln Dawes had a goal and three assists, coincidentally all to Bouton. Shannon Watridge scored twice and had an assist for the Giants (2-0-1, 1-0-1). Riley Anderson and Elsa Davis had the other two goals for Redwood.
- Tam got goals from seven different players in a 7-0 win against San Marin (1-1-0, 1-1-0). Carina Kelly scored a goal and was one of three players with two assists for Tam (2-0-0, 2-0-0), along with Lily Travers and Jordan Cushner. Thalia Greenberg, Kelley Grant, Kirsten Whetstone, Ariana Greenberg, Sydney Boyd and Amelie Kamperin also scored for Tam.
- Honor McFadden scored a hat trick to lead Marin Catholic to a 4-0 win against San Rafael (0-3-0, 0-2-0). McFadden also assisted on Zoe Sheppard’s goal for MC (1-0-0, 1-0-0) while Sheppard assisted on all three of McFadden’s goals.
- Branson (1-0-2, 0-0-2) picked up its second consecutive draw to begin league play, going scoreless against Terra Linda (1-0-1, 1-0-1).
- Ellie Casey, Elisa Schott and Kalina Kula all scored goals to push Drake (2-1-0) to a 3-0 non-league victory against Albany.
Men’s basketball
Dominican led in the final seconds, but Biola hit a late jumper to deny the Penguins (0-8) their first win of the season in a 65-64 loss. Jordan Williams led the scoring effort with 15 points while Lazar Djurovic racked up 14 points and 15 rebounds.
Girls water polo
On Saturday night, MCAL Player of the Year Sam Sternfels announced her commitment to continue her water polo career at Stanford University. The Tam senior led the Red-tailed Hawks to their first-ever NCS championship in 2018 and followed it up with a historic NorCal title this season.
Men’s water polo
Drake alum Quinn Woodhead scored a team-high five goals and dished out two assists to help Stanford outlast USC in triple overtime, 15-14, sending the Cardinal to Sunday’s NCAA final. His older brother, Dylan, tallied one goal and four assists while fellow Drake graduate Spencer Hanson also found the back of the net for Stanford.
Wrestling
Redwood’s Jaden Ramos took fifth place in the 113-pound bracket at the Hamada Classic at La Costa Canyon High in San Diego. Andrew Ji, having hit his match limit for the day at five, defaulted to take sixth place at 120 pounds. Michael Fitzsimmons (182 pounds) also finished inside the top 12.
