Ale Jessup’s goal with 20:33 left in the game lifted Abilene High to a 2-1 victory over Irving High at the Embree Duck Creek girls soccer tournament Thursday in Garland.
AHS scored the game’s first goal, when Justine Martinez cleaned up a rebound off a Gabby Stokes shot with 10:54 left in the first half.
Irving tied the game with 5:15 remaining in the opening half.
Jessup got the game-winning goal on a shot at the top of the box off a pass from Jocelyn Reece.
Eileen Cedillo had two saves in the first half at goal for the Lady Eagles, while Victoria Sauceda had one in the second half.
The Lady Eagles (1-0) play Cedar Hill at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
“The young ladies fought very hard to grind out a 2-1 win,” AHS coach Brent Camp said. “I am very proud of our efforts and progress we are making.”
Harvard-Westlake edges AHS boys 2-1
Harvard-Westlake scored the only goal of the second half on a penalty kick to beat Abilene High 2-1 in the opening round of the North Texas Elite Showcase boys soccer tournament Thursday in Lewisville.
Harvard-Westlake, a team from Los Angeles, California, scored the game’s first goal, but AHS tied the game on a goal by Colton Wilson. Johnny Rocha had the assist.
“They were a very difficult opponent,” AHS coach Kyle Riese said. “They moved the ball quickly and had a lot of technically sound players. We adjusted and started to take over the game, but we gave up an unlucky penalty for a hand ball in the second half that gave Harvard the win. Very proud of how hard we worked and how well we played against a very difficult team.”
The Eagles (0-1) play Arlington Lamar (0-1) at 4 p.m. Friday in a consolation semifinal game at Lewisville High School.
Grand Prairie beat Lamar 3-1 in its opener to move on to the winner’s bracket semifinals against Harvard-Westlake.
