NFL rumors: Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy fesses up, admits to lying to Jerry Jones on Day 1 as head coach - SILive.com

Mike McCarthy cannot tell a lie. OK, he CAN tell a lie. He just can’t keep quiet about it.

McCarthy wanted to be the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys so badly that he was willing to lie during his 12-hour interview with Jerry Jones. Best part is, McCarthy came clean during his introductory press conference Wednesday, according to USA Today.

“I need to confess: I told Jerry I watched every play of the 2019 season,” McCarthy said Wednesday during his introductory press conference. “I wanted the job. You do what you gotta do right?” McCarthy explained further after laughter died down. “It was more about tracking the trends and seeing what people were doing,” he said. “And a big part of it, too, was watching players, watching some of these new offenses, really a couple of guys on defense we were able to study. With the Cowboys and their excellent offense, they were a big part of those studies. It was more situational specific."

McCarthy replaces Jason Garrett, who won three NFC East division titles but just two playoff games during 10 years on the Cowboys sideline.

Before going to Dallas, McCarthy had been a candidate for the head coach job with the New York Giants. He interviewed with the Giants six days ago, but New York ended up going with New England Patriots special teams coordinator Joe Judge, who will be introduced to the media Thursday at 2 p.m.

McCarthy who was fired last year after 13 seasons as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, brings a stellar resume to Dallas, including a 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV. That game just happened to be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which McCarthy will now call home.
