FAIRFIELD — Nia Rouse scored in the 13th minute off a pass from Talyssa Tucker and the “visiting” Rodriguez High girls soccer team made it stand up for a 1-0 Monticello Empire League victory over defending champion Vacaville at Coach Ed Hopkins Memorial Stadium, Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (4-6-1, 3-2) were the designated home team as the game was rescheduled to Rodriguez because their Zunino Stadium is being renovated.
Rouse’s goal came on a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and another defender for Vacaville before going in.
“It was almost an own goal, but it was still off the deflections,” Mustangs coach Josh Levine said. “I’m still going to give her the goal.”
Rodriguez goalkeeper Jada Shelley recorded four saves.
While the Mustangs (8-2-3, 5-0 MEL) had a better record coming in, they didn’t take the Bulldogs lightly.
“Vacaville’s won three straight titles,” Levine said. “We knew, though we were in first place coming in, they’re still the previous league champions and we had to knock them off.”
Rodriguez hosts Wood on Friday, while Vacaville is at Armijo.
Vanden 3, Armijo 0: At Fairfield, the Vikings girls soccer team had some good news and some bad news in their match Wednesday against Armijo. The bad news: only one player scored for Vanden. The good news: she scored a lot.
Vanden freshman Aaryah Scott netted a hat trick in a 3-0 victory over the Royals, two in the first half and another in the second half, with assists coming from Jordan Peter, Paulina Ibarra and Kylie Eisan.
Scott was a mid-season call up for head coach Rich Weida and the move has paid dividends.
“She’s been phenomenal,” Weida said. “She’s really jumped at her opportunity and it’s been a real joy to watch.”
Vanden won the JV match, 6-0.
The Vikings will host Fairfield, Friday, while Armijo welcomes Vacaville.
