
Summer Laskey scored on a penalty kick in the final minute of overtime to lift the No. 3 seed Santa Cruz High girls soccer team past No. 6 Leland 4-3 in the Central Coast Section Division II quarterfinals Saturday.
Santa Cruz, the second-place finisher in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League, trailed 2-0.
“We learned from our past experiences and hung in there,” Cardinals coach Jay Gomez said. “We had a little luck on our side today, definitely when you want it.”
Jade Hays scored twice for the Cardinals and Julia Moore had a goal and assist. Goalie Victoria Jones made five saves.
Santa Cruz (14-3-5) plays at No. 2 Homestead (12-5-4) in the semifinals on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
D-I
No. 7 Gunn 2, No. 2 Aptos 1: The SCCAL champion Mariners (14-3-2) were upset in their D-I quarterfinal at Cabrillo College.
D-III
No. 7 Sacred Heart Cathedral 2, at No. 2 Monte Vista Christian 1: The Mustangs (12-4-4), runner-up in the Pacific Coast Athletic League Mission Division, were upset in their D-III quarterfinal.
D-IV
At No. 3 Salinas 2, No. 6 Pajaro Valley 0: The Grizzlies (13-4-1), champion of the PCAL Santa Lucia Division, was shut out in their D-IV quarterfinal loss.
Elizabeth Pozas and Camryn Garcia scored for the Cowboys (11-5-4), runner-up in the PCAL Gabilan Division. Marina Hernandez and Julieta Cortes recorded assists. Goalie Laryssa Venegas preserved the shutout with five saves.
Boys
Open Division
At No. 2 Watsonville 3, No. 7 St. Ignatius 2, OT: The PCAL Gabilan Division champions needed overtime to win their Open Division quarterfinal.
Jeal Leal scored twice for the Wildcatz and Julian Garcia added a goal.
The Wildcatz (16-3-2) host rival Bellarmine College Prep (15-2-4) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Bells beat No. 6 Leland 3-0 in their playoff opener.
D-III
At No. 4 Saint Francis (M.V.) 2, No. 5 Soquel 1: The SCCAL champion Knights saw their season come to a close in the D-III quarterfinals.
The Lancers scored 15 seconds into the game directly off of the opening kickoff.
Soquel battled through the shock and regained rhythm and momentum towards the end of the first half, threatening the Lancers’ goal three times.
St. Francis jumped ahead 2-0 on a counterattack in the 60th minute. Soquel immediately went back on the attack and created a penalty kick in the St Francis’ box. Sophomore midfielder, Aki Goonetilleki converted the kick and cut the lead in half.
“Soquel finished the game with some great pressure and inspired play but could not score the equalizing goal,” Knight coach Ashley Edgar said.
Edgar credited senior captains Quinn Sprague and Alessandro Compoginis, as well as senior defender German Alfaro for their outstanding play. Compoginis made five saves.
D-III
At No. 1 Menlo 4, No. 8 Pajaro Valley 0: The Grizzlies (12-6-3), runner-up in the PCAL Mission Division, were shut out in the D-III quarterfinals.
Ilan Listgarten scored the decisive goal from 20 yards in the 11th minute. Christian Corcoran, Jackson Aldrich and Aaron Morgan also scored for the Knights (15-2-4).
D-IV
At No. 3 North Salinas 5, No. 6 Harbor 0: The SCCAL Tournament champion Pirates were shut out in their D-IV quarterfinal. Santi Meza made four saves for Harbor (10-6-3).
