Tyler Telleson’s quick thinking lifts Redondo boys soccer into the quarterfinals - The Daily Breeze

There is a never anything automatic about taking a penalty kick.

In the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs, the Redondo boys soccer teams edged Long Beach Poly in the penalty-kick shootout (3-1).

During the regular season, coach Mark Hodson said the Sea Hawks had only taken one penalty kick.

The Sea Hawks were back on the penalty spot Friday with the game on the line.

Redondo’s Emani Raffo stepped up to the ball after the Sea Hawks were awarded a penalty late in their second-round game against El Dorado with the score tied 1-1.

Raffo went to the left, El Dorado’s goalkeeper guessed correctly and made the stop, but no one would stop Tyler Telleson.

“I was thinking there’s no way he’s not putting this on target,” Telleson said. “I was like the next logical step. Every time we’re going in on the ball, there’s no way we’re leaving the ball to chance.”

The keeper couldn’t corral Raffo’s shot and Telleson was right there to convert the rebound. The goal put Redondo ahead and it held on to defeat El Dorado 2-1.

“It was full sprint at the ball, put it in the back of the net,” Telleson said. “We practiced PKs the last practice before CIF.

“Throughout the season we’ve been in situations where we’ve been behind, but we’ve never lost our heads, never lost our discipline and we just keep playing. Nothing changed in this game, we kept playing and the result ended up our way.”

Redondo will face top-seeded Channel Islands in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.

Redondo took a 1-0 lead in the first half with Logan Kaufman’s left-footed curler from approximately 15 yards out.

That’s where the score remained until the 60th minute when El Dorado found the equalizer, although it appeared the Redondo goalkeeper Osric Vallejo had been impeded as he went up to secure the shot.

“For their equalizer, it looked to me like our keeper was impeded,” Hodson said. “It was two big calls … It was a lot of emotion in these playoff games.

“I don’t know if it was our best soccer performance, but we defended well, we were resilient … We’re excited to be through (to the quarterfinals).”
