COLORADO SPRINGS -- The Cowgirls soccer team rallied but came up short on Friday night, losing a 3-2 match at Air Force. The Cowgirls are now 4-4-3 overall and 1-2 in the Mountain West.

Cowgirls sophomore Indianna Asimus had two looks at the goal in the first five minutes of the game that were unable to make it past goalie Danielle Katz. Air Force answered with three straight shots which came up empty for the Falcons. In the 25th minute, a foul on the Cowgirls Savannah Warner would warrant a penalty shot for Air Force, and Emma buried it past goalie Hannah Lee to make it  1-0 Air Force.

With 29:36 on the clock, Jillian Jamero connected and scored her fourth goal of the season to make it 2-0 in favor of Air Force. The Falcons had eight shots compared to four by Wyoming, along with four corner kicks to one by the Cowgirls.

Out of the break, the Cowgirls would respond in the 51 minute. A series of shots by Wyoming wouldn’t reach the back of the net until a shot by senior Summer Taube was successful, cutting the Falcon lead in half. Redshirt freshman Jamie Tatum recorded her first assist of her career while it was Taube’s second goal of the season.

The Falcons outshot the Cowgirls 6-1 over the next 20 minutes. In the 82 minute, Tatum had a solid look at the goal but her laser shot went wide right of the goal. The Falcons continued to push the pace and Lexi Romero gave Air Force an insurance goal with 85:53 to go in the match. A late goal in the 90 minute by Tatum cut the deficit to one, but Wyoming fell short.

“Definitely, our play was better in the second half,” head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We matched the physicality of the game. It was a tough game and didn’t seem like there was a lot of flow. We need to regroup, go after three points on Sunday which is our next challenge. If we play a full 90 minutes, we can have some positive results.”

Wyoming was outshot by Air Force 19-10. Lee and fellow sophomore Riley Furbush each played 45 minutes and had a combined three total saves for UW. Katz was in net for Air Force, and made two saves in 90 minutes. The Falcons had seven corner kicks to Wyoming’s one. The teams combined for 27 fouls.

The Cowgirls return to the pitch on Sunday against the Colorado College Tigers. The match is set for 1 p.m. MT in Colorado Springs.
