The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off the second half of their 2019 regular season with a huge win over the Los Angeles Rams at Heinz Field on Sunday. After about the worst start possible in giving up a turnover for a touchdown 0:14 into the game, the Steelers defense rose to the task at hand in order to secure the 17-12 victory. To help but the win into perspective, here are some of the other numbers from the Steelers performance against the Rams in Week 10.

The Steelers held the Rams to one single third or fourth down conversion on the game. The Rams converted one out of 14 third-down conversions and zero of two fourth-down conversions. The single conversion came in the first drive of the second-half. The Rams moved the chains on a 3rd & 10 when they caught the Steelers with too many men on the field and took a shot for a 20 yard completion. Ironically, the very next play Joe Haden intercepted Jared Goff to get the ball back for the Steelers.

The Steelers held the Rams leading receiver, Cooper Kupp, to zero catches on four targets on Sunay. Kupp came into Week 10 third in the league in receiving yards with 792 and sixth in receptions with 58. Additionally, The Steelers held running back Todd Gurley to zero catches out of the backfield.

The Steelers were all over the field on defense getting their hands on passes all game. In total, the Steelers had 13 passes defensed against the Rams from seven different players. Joe Haden led the way for the Steelers with five passes defensed, including the final defensive play which led to the Minkah Fitzpatrick interception to seal the game.

Speaking of Mikah Fitzpatrick, he was involved with two of the four takeaways the Steelers had in the game, including returning the Javon Hargrave forced fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter. Fitzpatrick also added the interception to the end of the game. Joe Haden had an interception of his own, and Trey Edmunds was the other unlikely recipient of an interception as he picked off the errant pass on the Rams attempted fake punt.

While Steeler fans may not have known that in Week 9 James Washington set career highs in receptions and yards with four catches for 69 yards, he was able to better those numbers in Week 10. Catching six of the seven balls thrown his way, Washington had 90 yards receiving as well as the games only offensive touchdown. Unfortunately, on Washington’s longest reception of the game for either team, he had the ball knocked out and the Rams recovered the fumble for their second turnover of the game.

Coming from someone who was in the stadium for this game, it lasted a very long time! Part of the reason the game time was so long was due to the fact there were a combined 17 punts in the game. The Steelers punted the ball nine times for an average of 42.6 yards while the Rams punted eight times for an average of 47.4 yards. Combined, the two teams had 762 punting yards which was 183 more yards than the the two offenses collectively.

One of the most disappointing stats on the night was the Steelers inability to run the football. Rushing the ball 27 times for 42 yards gave the Steelers only in 1.56 yards per carry in the game. The longest run for the Steelers against the Rams was 8 yards.

The most important series of the game was the Steelers 14 play, 60 yard drive which began with 10:46 remaining in the fourth quarter and lasted exactly 8 minutes. The drive ended with a 33 yard Chris Boswell field goal which increase the lead from two points to five points, making a field goal insignificant for the Rams. It was the longest drive since the Steelers Week 6 game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
So there are some numbers to help evaluate the Steelers’ performance Sunday against the Rams. While many of these numbers are encouraging, the most important number is getting the win.
